Ras Aseyr Free Port Zone

Ras Aseyr also known (Cape Guardafui), in Somalia, is the headland that forms the geographical apex of what is commonly known as the Horn of Africa which considered as the most historical and strategic place in the Africa. Ras Asyre is a peninsula in East Africa that juts out for hundreds of kilometers into the Arabian Sea, and lies along the southern side of the Gulf of Aden. as Red Sea and Indian Ocean meet. It was referred by ancient Greeks as Aromata promontorium, also Ras Aseyr was described as early as the 1st century CE in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, along with other flourishing commercial settlements on the northern Somali littoral. In the early 19th century, Somali seamen barred entry to their ports along the coast, while engaging in trade with Aden and Mocha in adjacent Yemen using their own vessels. Ras Aseyr was commercial hap for the trader all over the world.

Currently, Puntland state of Somalia announced the creation of a new region coextensive with Cape Guardafui named Gardafuul. Carved out of the Bari region, it consists of five districts (Baargaal, Bareeda, Alula, Muranyo and Gumbax) and has its capital at Alula. Guardafui region is the largest region in Puntland, it has the longest coast ( Indian Ocean and Golf of Aden).

The main resources of the region are:-

  1. Frankincense:- Produces more than 1.5 milion kg. (Maydi, Beeyo, Falaxfalax and sweet Gum(Xankookib).
  2. Fish:- Production is high more than 50,000 Tans of fish every month.
  3. Date Palm, in the region there is 258,000 trees of date palm, if developed can produce enough dates to whole Somalia.
  4. Coal deposit, high quantity and quality.
  5. Oil and Gas- In Bina, Toxin, Afkalahaye and Geesalay.
  6. 26 Natural water springs- along the escarpments there are natural water springs, if developed will take lion share the development of the region.

The main projects that can be established in the region is the establishment of Guardafui International port which specifically located from Alula to Olog & Damo, The Port of Guardafui can be the main Port in whole Somalia and the Gate of Africa for the export and import, containers transit hap and traveling.

All coastal cities in Guardafui have significant tourism potential and will be an attraction to both national and international tourists. At present the traditional city ports do not provide for marina and yacht landing facilities and space, but it is foreseen those in coming years these ports will be flooded with pleasure vessel arrivals and berthing. Space and facilities will have to be planned in each of the city ports.
